"I'm always working on improvement"
At SDB Vitrinebouw, craftsmanship is key. After all, it’s the details – both visible and invisible – that make the difference. And that’s exactly what our team ensures. One of them is all-round technician Ron Erven (59). The Vught native worked here briefly in the late 1980s and returned in 2018.
Tell us, Ron – why did you come back?
“This job suits me well. I enjoy creating beautiful products at a good pace. Most of the time, I can do that in our workshop. Honestly, I’m not too keen on working on-site anymore. Carrying large glass panels through stairwells or installing in tight spaces… I prefer to leave that to the younger crew. I only do that in special cases now.”
What kind of craftsman are you?
“I’ve been doing this for over thirty years, so I know all the tricks by now. That allows me to think and work efficiently. For example, if I get an order with multiple display cases, I prepare them all at once. And a display case doesn’t leave my table until only the door needs to be added. Working on the floor is simply slower.”
“I’d really like to do more research and development”
What other qualities are typically Ron?
“I’m always looking to improve. I try to help colleagues with my experience and technical insight, and I brainstorm with management on how to work faster or better. Whatever ideas I have, I always speak up – I’m very direct. And I do enjoy a good joke now and then.”
And is there room for that at SDB?
“Absolutely, the atmosphere among the team is great! We work hard, but we have lots of fun too. I think there aren’t many companies like this.”
What would you still like to work on?
“Driven by my desire to keep improving, I’d really like to do more with research and development. Product development interests me too. I’ve definitely got plenty of ideas!”
